Quite frequently in Christendom we overlook the basics. It’s really quite easy to do considering we’re studying a book written by God Almighty and learning about His infinitely wise ways (Isaiah 55:8-9). But let’s take a short moment to get back-to-the-basics and learn, or at least remind ourselves, about the Name that is above every other name (Philippians 2:9-11).
The Name and Meaning of Jesus Christ
You probably say it at the end of prayers all the time, but have you stopped to think about what it means?
It turns out that “amen” is a transliteration of the Hebrew word “ ‘amen ”, meaning firmness or certainty. There is nothing innately powerful about saying this word at the end of a prayer, it is not like a “hocus pocus” spell to give our prayers a little more oomph. Nor is it a simple bookend so God knows that we’re done talking, like what you learned in school to write “Sincerely” at the end of a letter.
“Hey, what’s up? I’ve been looking for you…”
“HEY, WHAT’S UP? I’VE BEEN LOOKING FOR YOU…”
Notice the tone is read differently. The first is read with concern or ease while the second is read with importance or hostility. Typing a word or sentence in capitalization is, I believe, a modern invention utilized to add stress to a particular word or to just plain yell at someone.
However, in the Bible when you come across the word “LORD” in all caps the author isn’t applying the method above, but identifying the precise nature of the translated word. Whenever you see the word LORD in all caps it is a replacement for the Hebrew word “Yahweh” (pronounced “Yah-way”), which is the actual name of the God of the Bible. It’s important to differentiate between “Lord” and “LORD” because the latter is more personal and specific. Compare the intimacy and explicitness of me talking to you about “my friend” verses me talking to you about “Monica”; or me addressing you by first name instead of calling you simply “girl”.
Remember, while many people have been called or claimed to be a “lord” or even a “god”, there is only One true God who made heaven and earth and His beautiful and sacred name is Yahweh (LORD in English).
